How to Repair and Test Volkswagen 7-speed Transmission Mechatronics?

How to Repair and Test Volkswagen 7-speed Transmission Mechatronics?

What is DSG Transmission?

DSG transmission is an advanced technology that VW introduced to the automotive industry in 2003. VW is the first to introduce DSG and uses it most in its own vehicles. DSG transmission is known by everyone in the automotive industry, as VW is a pioneer in this regard.

DSG gearbox is more advantageous than other gearboxes due to the convenience in gear shifts and the savings it provides in fuel. Due to these advantages, other vehicle companies use this technology under different names.

DSG gearbox has 2 gear groups. These are 6 forward and 7 forward gears. Transmissions with 6-speed gears are oily, while 7-speed transmissions have dry clutches.

In order to test the malfunctions that may occur in the DSG Transmission, the DSG Transmission Tester has been produced by Nitro Mechatronics. The Tester consists of 3 parts. The first is the main body with the gear group. Although not very often, this body can also malfunction. The malfunction can be detected when the gearbox is disassembled and checked. When the fault is detected, the problem can usually be fixed, it is not necessary to replace the gearbox completely. The second is the group with the gear separation mechanism. In case of any malfunction, the clutch system is renewed and it is made usable again after the gear adaptation is made. The last one is the Mechanical unit. The fault mostly occurs in this part. Card failure, hydraulic body failure, solenoid valve failures may occur.

Today, the 7-speed DSG gearbox is widely used. So, let’s first examine what the 7-speed DSG means.

What does 7 speed DSG mean?

The dual-clutch DSG transmission is an automatic transmission that can change gears faster than other gear transmissions. In addition, the dual-clutch transmission provides more power and better control than conventional automatic and manual transmission systems.

The 7-speed DSG gearbox is the gearbox that has been gaining in popularity recently. The 7-speed gearbox was developed to replace the 6-speed gearbox, and it quickly became widespread and its usage area expanded.

The 6-speed gearbox is in a single-chamber state, that is, all parts in the DSG use a common oil. The worst part of this situation is that when any part of the transmission becomes dirty, it also affects other parts of the transmission. Therefore, some changes have been made in the 7-speed DSG gearbox in order to provide better efficiency and weight savings compared to previous models.

What is DSG? What is the best DSG test device?

What is DSG? What is the best DSG test device?

DSG stands for Direct-Shift Gearbox. Previously there was only manuel gearbox, then automatic gearboxes produced. After that VW found DSG gearbox. Unlike a conventional automatic gearbox, that has a torque converter instead of a traditional clutch, the DSG has two clutches. At the same time that you select one gear, the next is automatically pre-selected, this function enables much faster changes. If we compair it with other gear types, the DSG is more fuel efficient than a torque converter, because DSG waster less energy.

Simply this special gearbox has effectively two separate clutches that work together like as one unit, without a clutch pedal and with full automatic or semi-manual control.

What are the advantages of DSG?

The most hard-hitting advantage of the DSG is fast gear change that it provides. With the car that has DSG, you can experience rapid gear changes delivering a smooth flow of power that can actually help you save fuel.

General Advantage of the DSG gearboxes.

  • Lighting fast gear changes
  • It contains 7 gears
  • More km per Liter
  • Hard to notice the gearshift and no jerks.

How does DSG work?

Basicly if we explain how does DSG work, there are 6 speed in the DSG gerabox, the 1st, 3rd and 5th gears have their own clutch and the 2nd, 4th, and 6th gears have their own clutch. So, the next gear you’re about to change to is always already engaged. So DSG does not waste time.

What are the general malfucntions that ocur in DSG gearboxes?
There are several common faults that ocur on 7 speed DSG gearboxes.

Common faults of the DSG transmissions;

  • Internal high pressure hydraulic leaks: One of the common failers of the DSG is internal hydraulic leaks, this failure requires rebuild or complete replacement mechatronic unit. In order to fix this failer you need DSG repair kit.
  • TCU failure: This failure is also very common and requires replacement TCU or complete mechatronic unit. In order to check this failer you need a DSG test device. And also after you fix the problem, you should check it on the table with DSG test device.
  • External low pressure leaks: This failure is also very common, and you need to rebuild of mechatronic in order to fix this problem.

DQ200 DSG Fault codes:

06079 – Hydraulic pump, play protection
06300 – Function restriction, due to insufficient pressure build up
06293 – Function restriction due to pressure drop
P17BF – Hydraulic pump system overload protection

What is the best DSG tester?

Inorder to tell a tester best, it should be user-friendly, should have low cost and should serve complate solution. If we examine all these, you can clearly say that DSG test device that produced by Nitro Company is the best DSG tester.

Advantage of the DSG test device;

  • You do not need programming operations.
  • You do not need to connect the DSG to the vehicle.
  • Selonoid control and test
  • Selonoid cleaning feature
  • Both mechanical and electronic testing
  • Report screen
  • Auto test mode
  • Reasonable price
  • Saving time
